Fowlmead to become Betteshanger Country Park

Local and visiting cyclists will be pleased that Fowlmead Country Park near Deal is about to benefit from a massive upgrade with funding brought in by Hadlow College, a land-based college with courses up to degree level and campuses in West Kent and Canterbury.

Recently taken over by Hadlow College work will shortly start on major building and site infrastructure improvement as part of the wider Betteshanger Sustainable Parks regeneration program.

Betteshanger Sustainable Parks is a major new commercial, educational and visitor destination, located on the site of the former Betteshanger colliery in East Kent.  The £40m scheme will drive regeneration, preserve its history and heritage, deliver jobs and provide educational opportunity. The first stage, building a new £7.5m Visitor Centre begins in just a few weeks’ time.

The Visitor Centre will comprise of Conferencing and Weddings Facilities, Restaurant and Outdoor Sports Centre and from 2017 will be the proud home for the Kent Mining Museum.

The new “Betteshanger Country Park” will be a major visitor attraction, and unique eco-tourism destination.

A new Visitors Centre will open in 2016 including a Mining Heritage Museum celebrating Kent’s coal mining heritage alongside new environmental sustainable technologies like biomass, which will generate sufficient energy to power the centre and feed surplus into the grid.

The Park aims to become a centre of excellence in health and wellbeing, focussed on sport and outdoor pursuits. It will also house a café / restaurant featuring local and seasonal produce, conference and event facilities and retail.
